The yellowfin tuna, Buní to Bonairean anglers, is the brute that humbles even seasoned crews. Thunnus albacares is built for one thing: raw, sustained power. Hook one off Bonaire and your reel screams as the fish sounds for the deep, sickle fins flaring gold. This is sportfishing at its most physical and it starts minutes from the dock.
What it is
The yellowfin is a tuna in the truest sense: torpedo-bodied, blue above and silver below, with the long yellow finlets that give the fish its name. Caribbean yellowfin commonly run 100 to 250 lb here and trophies break 200 lb. Even the school fish, the smaller, free-swimming ones, will leave your arms burning. There is no easy yellowfin. Every one is earned, hand over hand, against a fish that simply will not quit.
Where on Bonaire
Bonaire’s geography stacks the odds in your favour. The leeward reef wall drops off within roughly 9 to 10 metres of shore and true deep blue water lies within a mile of the dock. We work two zones for yellowfin: the FADs a few miles out, jigged at first light at around 150 metres and the open dropoff in about 300 metres of water under a mile from the marina. No long, fuel-burning runs to the grounds. We are fishing while other boats are still steaming.
Best season
With sea temperatures holding at 26 to 28°C all year, yellowfin are present off Bonaire in every month. What shifts are the windows, the bites that switch on and fade as the year turns. There is no closed season here, only changing peaks, so a trip in any month can put you on a brute. We read the conditions and the bait and we put you where the fish are feeding.
How we fish it
Yellowfin reward an angler willing to mix it up. At dawn we drop heavy jigs to the FADs at around 150 metres, working them back through the column where the tuna hold. Over the dropoff we troll the wall at about 7 knots, swimming spreads through the blue. And when a school erupts on the surface, birds wheeling, bait showering. We cast straight into the chaos. Three methods, one target, and tackle, bait and drinks are included on every trip.
The fight
This is where the yellowfin earns its reputation. The first run is brutal and deep, the fish sounds straight down and there is no turning it. Then comes the work: the slow, grinding dogfight of lifting and winding, lifting and winding, while the tuna circles below and tests every part of you and your gear. Anglers who have landed marlin still talk about their first big yellowfin. Pound for pound, few fish in the ocean pull harder. With a max of six anglers aboard, there is room to fight it properly.
On the table
Few fish reward the effort like a yellowfin. This is sashimi-grade tuna, deep ruby flesh, clean and rich, the prize behind every great plate of sashimi, tataki and seared steaks.
