Few fish punch above their weight like the blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus), a compact bullet of muscle that will turn a light-tackle outing into a sweat. On Bonaire they prowl the deep blue right off Kralendijk and the fight they give belies their size. Hook one and you will swear it is twice as heavy. This is one of the most reliable, hardest-pulling targets in our waters and it is available the whole year through.
What it is
The blackfin is the smallest of the true tunas, but it is built entirely for speed and stamina. Typical fish run 5 to 20 lb, pocket-sized by tuna standards, yet pound for pound one of the most dogged fighters in the sea. Streamlined, dark-backed and built like a torpedo, it hunts in fast-moving schools that crash bait on the surface. What it lacks in bulk it pays back in sheer, stubborn power.
Where on Bonaire
You do not travel far for blackfin here. Bonaire’s leeward reef wall drops off within roughly 9 to 10 metres of shore and deep blue water lies within a mile of the dock, so blackfin are within reach minutes after we clear the marina. They hold over the reef edges and dropoffs and along the FADs a few miles out. They feed so close to the wall that anglers even cast to them from shore where the water plunges deep right at the rocks.
Best season
With sea temperatures sitting at 26 to 28°C all year, blackfin tuna are a year-round catch on Bonaire. There is no closed season here. The action peaks roughly from November through March, when schools bunch up and surface feeds become a daily event. Outside that window they are still very much around; you simply read the birds and the bait to find them.
How we fish it
We work blackfin two ways. Trolling small lures at around 7 knots along the dropoff covers ground and triggers savage strikes from cruising schools. When fish show on the surface, birds wheeling, bait spraying. We switch to casting, dropping lures straight into the boil for an explosive, visual take. Out at the FADs a few miles offshore we jig deeper water at around 150 metres for tuna holding below. Tackle, bait and drinks are all included, so you step aboard and fish.
The fight
This is where the blackfin earns its reputation. Once hooked it sounds, then settles into deep, dogged circles directly beneath the boat, the classic tuna death-spiral, scaled down but no less punishing. On light gear it is a genuine arm-burner that tests your drag, your knots and your patience. With a maximum of six anglers aboard, everyone gets their turn on the rod and a hot blackfin school can keep all six bent over the gunwale at once.
Eat or conserve
The blackfin is superb on the plate, its deep-red flesh makes excellent sashimi, clean and rich, easily a match for far pricier tunas. It is an abundant, fast-growing species, so a fish or two for the table sits well alongside responsible fishing. Keep what you will eat, release the rest in good condition and the schools keep coming back year after year.
